In this section, we will learn the basics of a linear equation in two variables. This type of equation is more complex than our first equation: the linear equation in one variable. We will explain the basic structure of this equation: ax + by = c, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a and b are not both zero. We will learn that the solutions to this type of equation come in what is known as an ordered pair (x,y). We will also show how to check an ordered pair to see if it is a solution to the equation given. Lastly, we will learn how to generate a table of solutions for a linear equation in two variables. This process is something we will utilize when we start graphing.
