Adding Radicals
About:
Additional Resources:
In this section, we learn about Adding Radicals and Subtracting Radicals. First and foremost, we must learn the definition of "like radicals". Like radicals have the same index and the same radicand. The only part that can be different is the number that is multiplying the radical. We add or subtract like radicals by adding or subtracting the numbers that are in front of the radical. The radical itself stays the same. Once we have completed our addition or subtraction, we simplify the radical using the methods we discussed in the previous section. In some cases, it will seem as though we do not have like radicals. We should always simplify each radical in this case and see if we end up with like radicals that can be combined through addition or subtraction.
