Graphing Linear Equations

In this section, we will learn how to graph a linear equation in two variables. There are many methods to execute this process, but we will focus on a simple method. We will create a table of ordered pair solutions. We accomplish this by choosing a value for x and solving for the unknown y. We can also choose a value for y and solve for the unknown x. Once we have the ordered pairs, we plot them on the coordinate plane. After the ordered pairs are plotted, we draw a straight line through the points. Arrows are drawn at each end of the line to indicate that the line continues forever in each direction. We will also cover the important concept of intercepts. The x-intercept is the point at which the graph crosses through the x-axis. To find this we set our y-value to zero and solve for x. Similarly, we have a y-intercept, which is the point at which the graph crosses through the y-axis. To find this value, we set our x-value to zero and solve for y. We will also learn about two special types of lines. We have horizontal lines, which are of the form: y = k, and vertical lines, which are of the form: x = k.
