Linear Equations in one Variable Part 1
About:
Additional Resources:
In this section, we will review how to solve a linear equation in one variable. We will review the addition property of equality. This property allows us to add or subtract any number to or from both sides of an equation, without changing the solution set. We will also review the multiplication property of equality. This property allows us to multiply or divide any non-zero number by both sides of an equation, without changing the solution. Once we have reviewed both properties, we cover our four-step procedure to solve a linear equation in one variable: ax + b=c. First, we simplify both sides, then we isolate the variable terms on one side and the numbers on the other, next we isolate the variable. Lastly, we check our solution by plugging in for our variable in the original equation. If we have the correct solution, the left and right sides will be equal or the same value.
