# Mixed Number Test #1

About:
Additional Resources:

In this section, we continue to learn about fractions. Here we will focus on converting mixed numbers into improper fractions. We will also learn how to reverse the process and turn an improper fraction into a mixed number. Let's start with the procedure to change a mixed number into an improper fraction:
Mixed Number to Improper Fraction:
1. Multiply the denominator of the fraction part by the whole number part
2. Add the result to the numerator of the fraction part
3. The result is the numerator of the improper fraction
4. Place the numerator over the denominator from the mixed number
Example 1: Rewrite each as an improper fraction $$1 \frac{2}{3}$$ -Mutliply (3) the denominator by (1) the whole number: 3 x 1 = 3
-Add the result (3) to the numerator of the fraction part (2): 3 + 2 = 5
-Place the numerator (5) over the denominator (3) from the mixed number $$1 \frac{2}{3} = \frac{5}{3}$$ Improper Fraction to Mixed Number:
1. Divide the numerator by the denominator
2. The quotient is the whole number for the mixed number
3. The remainder is the numerator for the fraction part
4. The denominator for the fraction part comes from the denominator of the improper fraction
Example 2: Rewrite each as a mixed number $$\frac{7}{5}$$ -Divide (7) the numerator by (5) the denominator: 7 ÷ 5 = 1 R2
-The quotient (1) is the whole number for the mixed number
-The remainder (2) is the numerator for the fraction part
-The denominator comes from the improper fraction (5) $$\frac{7}{5} = 1 \frac{2}{5}$$
