Ordered Pairs

In this section, we will learn how to plot ordered pairs (x,y) on the Cartesian Coordinate System, which is also known as the Coordinate Plane or Rectangular Coordinate Plane. We first explain how the coordinate plane is set up. We have two number lines, which intersect at the point (0,0). One of the number lines is horizontal and represents the x values. This number line is known as the x - axis. The other number line is vertical and represents the y values. This number line is known as the y - axis. Once we understand how the coordinate plane is set up, we show where the four quadrants are on the coordinate plane. Lastly, we cover how to actually plot an ordered pair. There are many techniques to do this, but we are simply finding the meeting point of the x and y locations on the coordinate plane.
